pH probes, ORP probes and buffer solutions for swimming pools

Discover why correct pH and ORP measurement is crucial for clear, safe and comfortable pool water. Read how to measure accurately with a pH meter or control system and which Meytec pH probes, ORP probes and buffer solutions support you best.

In swimming pools, pH and ORP are the two most important water parameters. The pH value determines the effectiveness of chlorine, the comfort of swimmers and the service life of the installation. The ORP value (oxidation-reduction potential) measures the disinfecting capacity of the water. An incorrect pH or ORP leads to cloudy water, algae growth, eye irritation or damage to pipes and equipment.

Why are pH and ORP important in swimming pools?

The pH value indicates how acidic or alkaline the water is, on a scale of 0 to 14. The ideal pH range for pool water is between 7.2 and 7.6. In this range, chlorine works optimally, the water is comfortable for eyes and skin, and limescale and corrosion are limited.

The ORP value is measured in millivolts (mV) and indicates the oxidising power of the water. An ORP value of 650 to 750 mV is generally known to be sufficient for safe disinfection. The higher the ORP, the faster bacteria and viruses are broken down. You do not calibrate at that reading, but with the buffer solution your controller asks for, usually 475 mV.

Consequences of an incorrect pH or ORP measurement

Reduced chlorine action: at a pH that is too high, the disinfecting power of chlorine drops drastically.

Eye and skin irritation: a pH that is too low or too high causes discomfort for swimmers.

Algae and biofilm growth: an insufficient ORP value indicates too little disinfecting capacity.

Corrosion and limescale: deviating pH values attack pipes, heat exchangers and other installations.

Cloudy water: an incorrect pH disrupts flocculation and filtration.

That is why continuous monitoring and regular measurement of pH and ORP are indispensable for every swimming pool.

How do you measure pH and ORP in a swimming pool?

There are two common methods:

Portable pH meter (handheld): a portable meter is ideal for quick on-site checks. The meter gives a digital value immediately and is easy to calibrate. With salt electrolysis, a pool salt tester goes with it.

pH and ORP measuring and control system (probes): a fixed system is permanently installed in the pipes of the swimming pool. The pH probe and ORP probe measure continuously in a flow cell. More advanced systems can automatically dose pH corrector or chlorine.

In both systems, the pH probe and ORP probe are the sensitive and most critical components. High-quality electrodes, correctly calibrated and maintained, determine the accuracy and reliability of your measurements.

pH probes, ORP probes and meters for swimming pools

Meytec supplies high-quality solutions for both types of measuring system: universally compatible pH probes, gold ORP probes, portable pH meters, a pool salt tester and all the calibration and maintenance solutions you need.

Swimming pool pH probe

Many swimming pools already work with pH controllers from renowned brands. Meytec offers universal pH probes with standard BNC, Ø12 mm and a 3 metre cable. Check that your device has a BNC input. This way you only replace the worn electrode and your existing system keeps working optimally. See the pH probe.

Our pH probes, with a fast response and stable measurement, are suitable for pool water with chlorine, salt or other disinfectants.

Swimming pool ORP probe

For disinfection control, Meytec supplies gold ORP probes with standard BNC. Our ORP probes are suitable for continuous measurement with chlorine, bromine or salt electrolysis systems. See the ORP probe.

Swimming pool pH meter

In addition to individual probes, Meytec also offers complete portable pH meters. These are easy to calibrate at 3 points and ready for use in pool water. Ideal for quick checks or to check whether the fixed control is still correct. See the pH meter.

Pool salt tester for swimming pools with salt electrolysis

Salt electrolysis systems produce chlorine by splitting the added salt into chlorine and sodium through electrolysis. Once in the pool water, these elements form salt again: a closed system. Too little salt: too little chlorine. Too much salt: extra strain on the cell and stainless steel.

You fill the pool with enough salt at the first start-up. After that, you measure again every year and top up slightly. Salt is lost through backwashing, topping up and rain. Most systems work between 3 and 5 grams per litre. Newer systems can work at 1.5 to 3 grams per litre. Always check the manual of your salt electrolysis system for the exact salt level.

You check the salt content with a pool salt tester. Our GT-500S measures 0–10 grams per litre (0–10,000 ppm). Calibrate the salt tester with conductivity standard 12880 µS/cm.

pH and ORP buffer solutions

A pH probe and ORP probe are precision sensors that must be calibrated regularly. Use only calibration solutions of known values for this. Meytec supplies:

pH buffer solutions: pH 4, pH 7 and pH 10, available in 20 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml. First pH 7, then pH 4 or pH 10.

ORP buffer solutions: usually 475 mV. Also 250 mV and 650 mV.

Calibrate at least twice per season, or more often when the value is in doubt. Calibrate every new probe when you start using it.

Cleaning pH and ORP probes

In pool water, limescale, grease, oils and biofilm can build up on the electrodes. This reduces response and accuracy. Never use aggressive cleaning agents or abrasives, but clean the probes with a special Meytec cleaning solution for pH and ORP probes.

For stubborn deposits, a soft brush can be used, but only in combination with the cleaning solution. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with demineralised water and recalibrate.

Storing pH and ORP probes

You must never store a pH probe or an ORP probe dry. Store them in the protective cap filled with KCl storage solution 3 mol/l. Meytec supplies this storage solution. Never store electrodes in tap water or demineralised water.

With fixed systems that run continuously, it is advisable to place the probes temporarily in storage solution during short maintenance stops.

With good maintenance and the right Meytec solutions, your pH and ORP probes last longer and your measuring system stays reliable.

Replacing pH probe and ORP probe in swimming pools

Below are the brands and systems that make up 99 per cent of the European replacement market.
