Lab technician at a microscope – probes, meters and buffer solutions for laboratories

pH probe and pH meter for laboratory

Reliable pH measurement is the basis of every laboratory result. Discover which Meytec pH probes, pH meters and buffer solutions make your measuring process reliable and traceable.

pH in the laboratory: why it matters and measuring pH with Meytec

Accurate pH measurement is one of the most fundamental analyses in every laboratory. Whether you work in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, the food industry or environmental analysis, correctly measuring and controlling acidity determines the reliability of your results.

Laboratories usually work with very accurate measurements to within 0.01 pH units, depending on the application and the applicable standards.

Consequences of an incorrect pH measurement

  • Unreliable analysis results: a deviating pH can affect chemical reactions and thus distort the outcome of experiments or analyses.
  • Rejected batches: in the food and pharmaceutical industry, an incorrect pH can lead to products that do not meet the specifications.
  • Safety risks: when working with acids and bases, correct pH measurement is important for a safe working environment.
  • Non-compliant quality control: laboratories working to ISO, GLP or GMP standards must be able to justify their pH measurements with calibrated and correctly maintained equipment.

That is why a reliable pH measuring system is indispensable in every professional laboratory environment.

How do you measure pH in a laboratory?

There are several methods:

  • Indicator paper or test strips: quick, but of limited accuracy and not suitable for quantitative analyses.
  • pH meter (handheld): a portable pH meter is a compact device that lets you check the pH value of a sample quickly and accurately. This type is ideal for fieldwork, quick checks or on-site measurements. The meter gives a digital value immediately and is easy to calibrate.
  • pH measuring and control system (pH probe): a fixed pH measuring system is permanently installed, for example in a flow cell or reactor. The pH probe sits continuously in the solution. The system measures continuously and shows the current value on a display or sends data to a PLC or LIMS. More advanced systems can dose automatically or trigger an alarm.

In both systems, the pH probe is the sensitive and most critical component. A laboratory-grade electrode, correctly calibrated and maintained, determines the accuracy and reproducibility of your measurements.

Meytec pH probes and meters for the laboratory

Meytec supplies high-quality solutions for both types of measuring system: universally compatible pH probes with BNC connector and portable pH meters. We also supply all the pH buffer solutions and maintenance solutions you need for laboratory use.

Laboratory pH probe

Many laboratories already have pH meters or automated measuring systems from renowned brands. Meytec offers universal pH probes with a standard BNC connector that fit most laboratory equipment. Check that your device has a BNC input. This way you can keep measuring with your existing system, without expensive replacement of the complete measuring set-up. See the pH probe.

Laboratory pH meter

In addition to individual probes, Meytec also offers complete portable pH meters for laboratory applications. These are easy to calibrate at 3 points for extra precision and suitable for measurements in aqueous solutions and samples. See the pH meter.

pH buffer solutions for laboratories

A pH probe is a precision sensor that requires regular calibration and correct maintenance — regardless of whether you use a portable meter or a fixed measuring system. With the right Meytec pH calibration solutions, you extend its service life and ensure reliable, reproducible measurements.

Calibrating with buffer solutions

A pH probe must be calibrated regularly to remain accurate. Use only calibration solutions of known pH values for this, such as pH 4 buffer solution, pH 7 buffer solution and pH 10 buffer solution. Meytec supplies these solutions in 20 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml, depending on your application and consumption.

Cleaning a laboratory pH probe

In laboratory environments, the glass membrane of the electrode can become contaminated by proteins, fats, oils or other sample residues. This reduces response and accuracy. Never use aggressive cleaning agents or abrasives, but clean the probe with a special Meytec cleaning solution for pH probes.

For stubborn contamination, a soft brush can be used, but only in combination with the cleaning solution.

Storing a laboratory pH probe

A pH probe must never be stored dry, because the glass membrane then dries out and is damaged beyond repair. Always store the probe in a protective cap filled with KCl storage solution 3 mol/l for pH probes. Meytec supplies this storage solution.

Never store the probe in tap water or demineralised water, as this damages the reference. With fixed measuring systems that run continuously, it is advisable to place the probe temporarily in a storage solution during short intervals.

With good maintenance and the right Meytec solutions, your pH probe lasts longer and your measuring system — portable or fixed — stays reliable.
