What is KCl storage solution?
KCl storage solution 3 mol/l is the solution in which you store a pH probe or ORP probe. It is not a buffer solution. You fill the protective cap with it. The KCl keeps the glass bulb and the junction wet and prevents the reference electrolyte from being drawn out of the probe.
How does KCl storage solution work?
The probe contains KCl as reference electrolyte. Demineralised water draws that KCl out: the junction dries out, the glass bulb loses hydration and the measurement becomes slow or wrong. KCl 3 mol/l has the same concentration as the electrolyte in the probe. As a result, the bulb stays hydrated, the junction stays open and the probe is ready for the next measurement.
How to use KCl storage solution
If your pH probe or ORP probe has been stored dry, pour some storage solution into a separate beaker and let the probe soak in it overnight; do not put it in the bottle itself. Then store the probe upright in the protective cap with storage solution, at 5 to 30 °C. KCl storage solution is also available in sachets of 20 ml, per box of 25.
Storing KCl storage solution 3 mol/l
Store the solution in its original, tightly closed packaging, cool and dry at 15–25 °C, protected from frost and direct sunlight, and away from strong acids or oxidising agents.
