Yellow fish in an aquarium – pH probe and pH meter for aquarium

pH probe and pH meter for aquarium

Discover why a stable pH is crucial for healthy fish and plants. Read how to measure pH correctly with a pH meter or control system and which Meytec pH probes, pH meters and pH buffer solutions support you best.

pH probe and pH buffer solutions for aquariums

A stable pH value is one of the most important parameters for a healthy aquarium. Understanding and controlling the acidity of your water prevents stress, disease and even death among fish, shrimps and plants.

Most freshwater aquariums thrive best at a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, but this depends strongly on the fish species. Discus and many South American species require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5), while African cichlids need harder, alkaline water (pH 7.8–8.5).

Consequences of an incorrect pH

  • Stress and reduced resistance: fish are sensitive to sudden changes. A deviation of more than 0.3 pH per day can already cause stress.
  • Ammonia poisoning: at a high pH (above 7.5), ammonium is converted into toxic ammonia. Even small amounts can be fatal.
  • Poor plant growth: aquatic plants only absorb nutrients well within a certain pH range.
  • Disruption of the biological filter: beneficial bacteria work best at a stable pH; extreme values slow down nitrification.

That is why regular measuring and monitoring of the pH is essential for every aquarium.

How do you measure pH in an aquarium?

There are several methods:

  • Test strips or drop tests: cheap, but often inaccurate and subjective due to colour interpretation.
  • pH meter (handheld): a portable pH meter is a compact device that lets you check the pH value of your aquarium quickly and accurately. This type is ideal for periodic checks: daily, weekly or whenever you suspect something is wrong. The meter gives a digital value immediately and is easy to calibrate.
  • pH measuring and control system (pH probe): a fixed pH measuring system is permanently installed. The pH probe sits continuously in the aquarium water or in a flow cell (bypass). The system measures continuously and shows the current value on a display. More advanced control systems can also control the CO2 supply.

In both systems, the pH probe is the sensitive and most critical component. A high-quality electrode, correctly maintained, determines the reliability of your measurements — whether you measure manually or control fully automatically.

pH probes and pH meters for aquariums

Meytec supplies high-quality solutions for both types of measuring system: universally compatible pH probes with BNC and portable pH meters. We also supply all the pH buffer solutions and maintenance solutions you need.

Aquarium pH probe

Many aquarium enthusiasts and professionals already own a pH meter or control system. Meytec offers universal probes with a standard BNC connector that fit most devices. This way you can keep measuring with confidence using your own measuring system. See the pH probe.

Aquarium pH meter

In addition to individual probes, Meytec also offers complete portable pH meters. These are easy to calibrate at 3 points for extra precision and ready for use in freshwater or saltwater aquariums. See the pH meter.

pH buffer solutions for aquariums

A pH probe is a precision sensor that requires regular calibration and correct maintenance — regardless of whether you use a portable meter or a fixed control system. With the right Meytec pH calibration solutions, you extend its service life and ensure reliable, accurate measurements.

Calibrating with buffer solutions

A pH probe must be calibrated regularly to remain accurate. Use only calibration solutions of known pH values for this, such as pH 4 buffer solution, pH 7 buffer solution and pH 10 buffer solution. Meytec supplies these solutions in 20 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml, depending on your application and consumption.

Cleaning an aquarium pH probe

In aquarium water, deposits form on the glass membrane of the electrode over time (limescale, organic contamination, algae growth). This reduces response and accuracy. Never use aggressive cleaning agents or abrasives, but clean the probe with a special Meytec cleaning solution for pH probes.

For stubborn deposits, a soft brush (for example an old toothbrush) can be used, but only in combination with the cleaning solution.

Storing an aquarium pH probe

A pH probe must never be stored dry, because the glass membrane then dries out and is damaged beyond repair. Always store the probe in a protective cap filled with KCl storage solution 3 mol/l for pH probes. Meytec supplies this storage solution.

Never store the probe in tap water or demineralised water, as this damages the reference. With fixed measuring systems that run continuously, it is advisable to place the probe temporarily in a storage solution during short intervals.

With good maintenance and the right Meytec solutions, your pH probe lasts longer and your measuring system — portable or fixed — stays reliable.

Conclusion

A stable pH is the basis of a healthy aquarium. Whether you choose a portable pH meter for periodic checks or a fixed measuring and control system for continuous monitoring, the quality of the pH probe and its maintenance are decisive. With pH probes, pH meters and pH buffer solutions from Meytec, you keep your water values optimal and your fish and plants in top condition.
