TDS calibration solution for TDS meter

A TDS meter only measures correctly if you calibrate it regularly. With Meytec TDS buffer solution 3000 ppm you set your meter back to the correct value in a few minutes.

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) indicates how many dissolved substances are in water, expressed in ppm (mg/l). TDS meters actually measure conductivity and convert it to ppm. Due to contamination, wear and temperature, that measurement drifts over time. A calibration solution with a fixed, known value corrects that.

Applications

  • Process water, cooling water, boiler water and well water: for TDS meters that measure around several thousand ppm.
  • Aquarium and hydroponics: if your meter has a calibration point around 3000 ppm. For drinking water and osmosis water, a lower standard is a better fit.

Rule of thumb: calibrate as close as possible to the value you normally measure. If you measure in µS/cm, choose a conductivity standard 1413 µS/cm 60 ml or a conductivity standard 12880 µS/cm 60 ml.

How to calibrate a TDS meter with 3000 ppm

  1. Rinse the electrode with demineralised water and pat it dry. If the electrode is dirty, clean it first with cleaning solution.
  2. Pour a fresh dose of solution into a clean beaker. Do not put the probe into the bottle.
  3. Preferably calibrate at 25 °C, or use a meter with automatic temperature compensation (ATC).
  4. Put the meter into calibration mode, according to the manual of your meter, and immerse the electrode.
  5. Wait until the value is stable and set 3000 ppm, or confirm that value.
  6. Rinse the electrode after use and discard the used solution. Never pour it back into the bottle.

Storing TDS calibration solution

Store the solution in its original, tightly closed packaging, cool and dry at 15–25 °C, protected from frost and direct sunlight, and away from strong acids or oxidising agents.

Frequently asked questions about TDS calibration solution

How often should I calibrate my TDS meter?

At least once a month, after replacing the electrode and after measurements in aggressive or heavily contaminated water.

When do I choose 3000 ppm instead of 1382 ppm?

Calibrate as close as possible to your normal reading. For high TDS values, 3000 ppm is more suitable. For drinking water or osmosis water, a lower standard is closer to your reading.

Why does the label say 25 °C?

The value of 3000 ppm applies at 25 °C. Calibrate as close as possible to that temperature, or use a meter with automatic temperature compensation.

Does this solution work with every TDS meter?

Yes, if your meter can measure and calibrate 3000 ppm and works with factor 0.5.

What is the difference from a conductivity standard or pH buffer solution?

TDS calibration solution calibrates a meter in ppm. A conductivity standard calibrates in µS/cm. pH buffer solution is only for a pH meter.

May I pour used solution back into the bottle?

No. Used solution is contaminated and changes the value of the whole bottle.
