pH probes and pH buffer solutions for the food industry
Discover why correct pH measurement is crucial for food safety, shelf life and taste. Read how to check pH accurately with a pH meter or measuring system and which Meytec pH probes and buffer solutions support you.
In the food industry, pH is one of the most frequently measured parameters. From raw material to end product, acidity determines microbiological stability, texture, colour and taste. An incorrect pH can lead to spoilage, rejected batches or even health risks for the consumer. That is why accurate and regular pH control is indispensable in every production environment.
Why is pH important in the food industry?
Most foods are acidic (pH < 7), which inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria. For example, yoghurt, cheese, wine, preserves and fruit juices have a low pH that contributes to their shelf life.
Consequences of an incorrect pH measurement
- Microbiological risk: a pH that is too high can allow the growth of pathogens such as Clostridium botulinum.
- Deviating taste and texture: pH affects protein structures, emulsion stability and enzyme activity.
- Unstable products: an incorrect pH can lead to separation, discolouration or off-flavours.
- Non-compliant quality: customers and legal standards require strict pH control within certain limits.
That is why a reliable pH measuring system is essential in every food factory, from laboratory to production line.
How do you measure pH in the food industry?
There are two common methods:
- pH meter (handheld): a portable pH meter is ideal for quick checks on the shop floor, on receipt of raw materials or during process control. The meter gives a digital value immediately and is easy to calibrate.
- pH measuring and control system (pH probe): a fixed system is permanently installed in pipes, tanks or reactors. The pH probe measures continuously and can dose automatically or raise an alarm in the event of deviations.
In all cases, the pH probe is the most critical component. A well-maintained probe ensures reliable, reproducible measurements and extends the service life of your measuring system.
Meytec pH probes and meters for the food industry
Meytec supplies high-quality solutions for both portable pH meters and fixed measuring systems: universally compatible pH probes, complete pH meters and all the calibration and maintenance solutions you need.
Food industry pH probe
Many food companies already work with pH meters or inline systems from renowned brands. Meytec offers universal pH probes with a standard BNC connector that fit most equipment. Check that your device has a BNC input. This way you only replace the worn probe and your existing system keeps working optimally. See the pH probe.
Our pH probes, with a fast response and stable measurement, are suitable for aqueous samples, sauces, dairy products, drinks and other liquid foods.
Food industry pH meter
In addition to individual probes, Meytec also offers complete portable pH meters. These are easy to calibrate at 3 points and ready for use in food samples. Ideal for quality control and sampling. See the pH meter.
pH buffer solutions for the food industry
A pH probe is a precision sensor that must be calibrated regularly. Use only calibration solutions of known pH values for this, such as pH 4 buffer solution, pH 7 buffer solution and pH 10 buffer solution. Meytec supplies these solutions in 20 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml, depending on your consumption.
Calibrate daily or before every measuring session, and follow the instructions of your meter or installation.
Cleaning a food industry pH probe
Food residues, proteins and fats can contaminate the glass membrane of the probe, reducing response and accuracy. Never use aggressive cleaning agents, but clean the probe with a special Meytec cleaning solution for pH probes from Meytec.
For stubborn contamination, a soft brush can be used in combination with the cleaning solution. Then rinse thoroughly and recalibrate.
Storing a food industry pH probe
A pH probe must never be stored dry, because the glass membrane will then dry out. Always store the probe in a protective cap filled with KCl storage solution 3 mol/l. Meytec supplies this storage solution.
Never store the probe in tap water or demineralised water. With fixed systems that run continuously, place the probe temporarily in storage solution during maintenance stops.
With good maintenance and the right Meytec solutions, your pH probe lasts longer and your measuring system stays reliable.
